Who we are

Our vision

It’s on us to keep our
children and young people
feeling safe, wherever they are.

Businesses play a crucial role in addressing and preventing child abuse.

On Us Coalition is an initiative working towards securing business’ commitment to safeguarding children and young people, delivered by sector leader Australian Childhood Foundation.

We are paving the way to a deeper understanding of best practice in building a strong and lasting safeguarding culture in businesses, equipping them with the means to ensure all children and young people are safe.

We have the knowledge, expertise, and tools to help businesses implement best practice solutions to effectively safeguard children and young people.

On Us brings together key decision makers and influencers from organisations that may not directly work with children and young people, but may impact upon their rights and safety through their products, services, and operations.

Safeguarding children is the responsibility of adults:

  • It’s On Us to learn about business risks to children
  • It’s On Us to share knowledge and best practices on child safeguarding throughout the business community
  • It’s On Us to advocate for children’s safety, wellbeing, and rights
  • It’s On Us to take action to address business risks, and implement child safeguarding measures within our business operations and practices

What does safeguarding children mean?

Safeguarding children is the process of protecting children and young people from harm, abuse, neglect, and exploitation, while promoting their wellbeing, safety, and development. It involves a range of proactive and preventive measures designed to create a secure environment in which children can grow, learn, and thrive.

Safeguarding children and young people encompasses various aspects:

  • Protection from abuse: preventing and addressing physical, emotional, or sexual abuse directed at children and young people
  • Prevention of neglect: ensuring children and young people’s basic needs, such as food, shelter, education, and healthcare, are met, and they are not subject to neglect
  • Child welfare: promoting children and young people’s overall wellbeing, including physical and mental health, emotional stability, and education
  • Online Safety: protecting children and young people from online risks and cyberbullying, ensuring safe internet use and privacy
  • Advancing the rights of children: taking action to promote and uphold the basic entitlements of all children and young people to ensure that their needs for love, family, culture, and education are met
  • Listening to children: actively involving children and young people in decisions that affect their safety and wellbeing, as well as creating an environment where they feel safe to express their concerns

acknowledgement of country and abuse victims
The On Us: Australian Business Coalition for Safeguarding Children acknowledges Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the Traditional Custodians of the land and waters across Australia in which we share. We honour and pay our respects to Elders past and present and acknowledge the many thousands of years in which First Nations’ peoples have raised their children to be safe and strong. We also acknowledge the spirit and courage of victims and survivors of childhood abuse, exploitation and violence. Their efforts over many years have inspired our commitment to make changes at every level to better protect the children of today.
