Call to action for Business on National Child Protection Week

This week, as we reflect on the theme for NAPCAN‘s National Child Protection Week “Every conversation matters: shifting conversations to action”, I’m reminded that in business, the conversations we avoid are often the ones that matter most.

Too often, the risks children and young people face through our products, services, people, and operations are not openly named. At the On Us Coalition, we have seen that when businesses take the step to name these risks, they are far more able to take action to reduce them.

The five key risks for business are clear:
1️⃣ Products
2️⃣ Services
3️⃣ People
4️⃣ Operations (Marketing, communications, events, facilities etc.)
5️⃣ Supply Networks

Recognising these risks is not about blame. It is about responsibility. Children and young people should never be harmed by the way business is done.

That is why the On Us Coalition has developed the Child Safeguarding in Business Principles and our self-assessment tool, to give organisations a practical pathway from awareness to action.

Every conversation matters, but only when it leads to change. My challenge to leaders is this: what action is your business taking to safeguard children and young people?

If you are ready to move from conversation to action, reach out. Our members Westpac, The GPT Group, IHG Hotels & Resorts, TikTok, Rugby League Players Association (RLPA), OBE Organic®Australian Beef, Cirka and Arinex can show you what action looks like.

acknowledgement of country and abuse victims
The On Us: Australian Business Coalition for Safeguarding Children acknowledges Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the Traditional Custodians of the land and waters across Australia in which we share. We honour and pay our respects to Elders past and present and acknowledge the many thousands of years in which First Nations’ peoples have raised their children to be safe and strong. We also acknowledge the spirit and courage of victims and survivors of childhood abuse, exploitation and violence. Their efforts over many years have inspired our commitment to make changes at every level to better protect the children of today.
