On Us Coalition Hosts Inaugural Masterclass

The On Us Coalition made a significant step in our mission to combat online child exploitation with the launch of our masterclass, focusing on providing members with training and education from the world’s leading child safeguarding experts.

Hosted by John Tanagho, Executive Director of the International Justice Mission (IJM)’s Center to End Online Sexual Exploitation of Children, April’s inaugural masterclass focused on educating businesses about the methods of protecting children from online exploitation. The topics covered included trafficking and the production of exploitative materials.

John shared effective practices from IJM’s Philippines program to enhance the justice system and private sector responses, resulting in sustainable child protection and offender accountability.

Shocking statistics revealed that nearly half a million Filipino children were trafficked to produce new child sexual exploitation material in 2022 alone, with Australia ranking third in payments linked to child exploitation in the Philippines.

Further key takeaways from the masterclass were that businesses need to have survivors voices front and centre, have hard and uncomfortable conversations with themselves and others around protecting children, participate in the global effort to combat exploitation, and place online safety on the scale of physical safety.

The masterclass concluded with a call to action for businesses and the Coalition to support the strengthening of Australia’s Online Safety Act that is currently under review.

The next Coalition masterclass will look at the profiling of sex offenders.

acknowledgement of country and abuse victims
The On Us: Australian Business Coalition for Safeguarding Children acknowledges Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the Traditional Custodians of the land and waters across Australia in which we share. We honour and pay our respects to Elders past and present and acknowledge the many thousands of years in which First Nations’ peoples have raised their children to be safe and strong. We also acknowledge the spirit and courage of victims and survivors of childhood abuse, exploitation and violence. Their efforts over many years have inspired our commitment to make changes at every level to better protect the children of today.
